Father’s Role in Childbirth

The important role dads and partners play in the delivery room.

Father’s Role

A few generations back, fathers weren’t even welcome in the delivery room, but were relegated to pace in the waiting room until the birth of their child.  Of course things are different today with some survey’s suggesting that more than 90% of women have their partner present. That’s not to say that aren’t some misgivings says Ann Douglas, author of The Mother of All Pregnancy Books.

Some fathers do find it rather daunting, thinking about being present during their wife’s labor and more often than not the anxiety comes down to “what if I don’t know what to do to help her?”. So what I tell fathers who are feeling maybe a little overwhelmed is to line up some other support. Perhaps they might want to bring a doula in or a friend or another family member, somebody who can help share the duties with them. Because really they have the opportunity to witness a miracle and it would be shame to miss out on that. You share an incredible bond with your partner when you both are there present at the birth of your child. It’s a very special moment in your family’s history.
