Why kids’ growing imaginations need all types of toys to play with.
What toys did your children wish for this holiday season?l. Often at the top of children’s wish lists are those media based toys, you know, Disney and the like. While these are fun, it’s important to provide children with options explains educational psychologist Jackie Sennet.
“I think by providing them with unstructured type toys that don’t always have a single solution or a single way of playing with that particular toy can be really important for young children. When children do play with media based toys, their play becomes very scripted. And, children are not able to allow other sorts of characters into the play, so they follow a regulated script. And, this can be wonderful in some cases but if children’s toys are limited to media based toys, this may not always work to the child’s benefit.”
