Nature Vs Gifts

Teaching our kids to value more than just the material things in life.

Gifts vs Nature

Particularly at this time of year, it’s difficult to convince kids that there’s more to life than just stuff, after all the commercials are telling them that nothing could make them happier than getting the latest toy.  But in the long run we’re doing our kids a favour to teach them that we can find happiness in the simple things, says Adria Vasil, author of Ecoholic. “I think the best thing we can do for our kids is to teach them from a young age that buying things isn’t going to make them happy. We start them pretty young on the concept (that money buys happiness) by buying them gifts whenever they do something good, and I think it teaches them that we only feel good when we buy new things. We can actually show them that you can feel good in other ways by spending quality time with them, going for a walk with them, bike ride as a family, or go to a conservation area.  Teach them a different set of values that carries through with them over the course of their lives so that they’ll always have a sense of appreciation for nature.”
