Media Literacy

Using TV to teach our kids to be critical thinkers.

Media Literacy

Let’s face it, electronic media isn’t going away.  In fact, it’s quite the opposite.  From radio to TV, to movies, smartphones, tablets and more, the media inundates our children’s lives.  So rather than just switching off the TV’s and laptops, we’d do better to teach children to be critical thinkers and users of media says Linda Gordon, co-author of “Why Boys Don’t Talk and Why It Matters”. “What parents need to do is they have to express their own value system and use the messages so that their son can become a critical thinker. And don’t paint everything with a black or white paint brush. The media is complicated, and so as a parent what you need to do is bring your child closer to you by expressing what your value system is, and your child can either accept it or reject it.  That is the passage of growing up, but you can use it to your child’s advantage.”
