The challenge of life with step siblings.

Step Siblings

When a parent with children remarries another parent with children, a whole new family dynamic is created. Mark Ackerman, author of Does Wednesday Mean Moms House or Dads? Says, parents need to be sensitive of their kids’ needs in this situation, keeping in mind that becoming a step family is a huge transition for children. “A child who used to be the oldest in a family, isn’t the oldest anymore. A child who used to be the youngest in a family, isn’t the youngest anymore.  So the parents have to be very careful of understanding this dynamic, and not allowing themselves to slip into the old adage of ‘well, children are flexible, children can adjust’. A lot of times, what appears to parents to be small issues get ignored and that impairs the step-sibling relationship.”
