How family rituals can light up children’s lives during holiday season.
Hi. I’m Joanne Wilson with The Parent Report. It seems that during the chilly month of December, many families are enjoying traditions and rituals together. Whether it’s based on culture or religion or is simply a way to lighten the dark days of winter, traditions bring a lot of meaning for children, and help bring joy into families’ lives explains Alyson Schafer, author of Honey I Wrecked the Kids. (20)”When we create rituals and traditions we have a sense of “this is what our family is. This is what our family does. This is something predictable that defines us.” And so, just the same way that a soccer team might all have matching uniforms, suddenly you’ve got a family tradition where everybody pulls a little popper cracker at the festive table, or you all go caroling. Whatever it may be. That’s the part that creates a sense of affiliation and is the glue that holds the team together, and kids just love that.”
