How much unprotected sun exposure is safe for kids?
Recently we’ve been hearing how low levels of vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, has been linked diseases and health issues in children and adults. On the same token, we’re told that too much sun exposure in childhood can lead to cancer in adulthood. So what’s the story? Dr. Jeremy Friedman, Author of “Canada’s Toddler Care Book” offers some clarification. A lot of children seem to be Vitamin D deficient and they do need some sun exposure. I think the basic safety rule to follow is to avoid the sun at it’s peak period from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. If one is out in the sun at this time it is important to use a sun protective lotion with a Sun Protection Factor of 30 or higher. A little bit of sun exposure is important but this degree of exposure can be achieved outside of the peak time, we are only needing about ten or fifteen minutes of sun exposure.”
