The emotional challenge of being a new mom.
While post partum depression can be a serious concern that needs to be addressed by a physician, the more common baby blues are another matter. Usually they’re a result of the surging hormones that strike after the birth of a baby. And in many ways, the baby blues are a natural response to the major life change new moms are going through, explains Kaz Cooke, author of Kid Wrangling. “In some ways I think that having the baby blues, that sort of grieving for your former life is actually a really natural response to having a baby. Your life does change and even though you might be madly in love with your baby, I think it’s okay to say ‘gee, I can’t walk out the front door and go to lunch with people anymore, whenever I feel like it, I can’t go to work and be in control of the situation anymore. I think it’s okay to grieve for that. I think it can be a very natural and okay response.”
