Air Travel with Young Children

Air Travel Air travel with young children doesn't have to mean fussing and crying. With a little planning, flying can be an enjoyable part of a family vacation.

Flying by air with young children may seem like a daunting task. After all, we've probably all sat near a crying baby and thought how frustrating it must be to travel with an unhappy tyke. But with a little preparation, air travel with young children can go off without a hitch.

First, if your flight isn't too long, try to arrange it around your child's naptime. If it is a long flight, consider flying later in the day, or in the early evening when a child may fall asleep for part of the flight. Also take advantage of the many conveniences airlines offer such as children's meals, headsets, and even activity sets. And once you're in the air, it's wise to prevent boredom by keeping your child occupied explains in-flight safety manager Christine Holiday. "It's really important that you keep your children active while they're on the plane because children aren't aware of the time factor. I recommend bringing a lot of little activities and books to keep them occupied. There's not a lot for them to see once above the clouds."

Holiday adds that parents are doing themselves a favor by arriving early to take advantage of preboarding. "We recommend that you get to the airport so that you have lots of time to make the arrangements and last minute trips to the bathroom. The airlines offer preboarding assistance that allows you to get settled in seats before the rest of the passengers get on. In addition, you'll get any preflight briefing important to those who have children on board."

Another reminder is that children can find take-off and landing uncomfortable on their ears, so have your infant nurse, or give her a pacifier or a bottle. For the older child, candy or gum can ease the ear blockage. And of your child has a cold, see your doctor before traveling. He may recommend you re-arrange your trip for another time, as flying can be extremely painful for children's ears when they have a cold.

Finally, if your child finds flying upsetting, don't fret too much. When all is said and done, plane trips are relatively short and before you know it you'll be back on the ground either safe at home or enjoying what will be a memorable vacation together.

No problem, We just flew with our 5 weeks old baby from Hanoi-Vietnam to Hawaii-America. He just either played or slept, nothing was wrong. Don't worry...

  • Re: Board Plane Last!
I agree... but because overhead compartment space gets filled up easily, my husband usually boards ahead to set things up, and the kids and I board last (this only works if there are two adults, of course!)

  • Board Plane Last!
Travel tips always say to board first, but we always board last! Less time on the plane the better for us.

I would also like to know if there is an age that is too young. I will have to take a 4 hour flight then hop on another 17 hour flight. How long is too long for newborns. Or maybe I should just have him on the plane :)

Hillary, have you found any answers to your question? I am in a very similiar situation. I need to come from Canada to the UK and would like to travel as soon as I can after the birth of my child. I have heard differing opinions: that flying before 6 months old could present cause of SIDS...and another source told me after 7 days old we're safe to fly. I am still searching for a wise answer. Can you offer any info?

I also live out of the States and want to return to the States for the birth of my baby but have many concerns. I will want to return to Europe soon after the baby is born as my husband will have to return to work soon after the birth. I don't want to be separated from him for too long and was hoping that I could fly back at least 2-3 weeks after giving birth, but will that be too long of a flight for a newborn? It is a scary thought...

  • Re: Worried Mother
Hi! I flew with my youngest daughter when she was 8 weeks old and many times since. I must say that I preferred flying with her at 8 weeks over flying with her at 2. We flew from the east coast of Canada to the west coast and booked an evening flight and it was fine. If you still decide not to fly just tell them that they are welcome to visit you but you do not want to expose your new baby to all the germs on the plane. You will be saying "no"... View More

  • Worried Mother
I am a first time mother-to-be due on jan 10, 05 in california. My In-laws have planned a family trip in tennesse on march 1-3 and they are forcing us to come to the family vacation. I am afraid of flying with my newborn 6 week old child across the country. Is it safe to fly with such a small baby. How do I tell my in-laws "NO".

Tia- Don't worry. I am have flown many times, and will help you through this. We are expecting our first in less than 3 wks and will be flying in Dec. with her. First of all. Since you are flying alone, it will be easiest to have your baby in a sling or front pack for the entire trip, that way you won't have to carry an infant seat, or pay for an extra ticket, you just have to buy one for yourself (children under the age of 2 can fly for free if...
