Foods Allergies - Signs and Symptoms

Foods Allergies - Signs and Symptoms If your child has trouble breathing or gets hives after eating, then she may have a life threatening food allergy.

In children, particularly young ones, intolerance to certain foods is fairly common. But actual food allergies, when the body's immune system reacts to certain foods, are rare, effecting only one to three percent of the population. Nonetheless, food allergies can be dangerous and even life threatening.

Allergist Dr. John Dean explains some of the signs of a true food allergy. "Possible signs of a food allergy are severe eczema, swelling around the mouth, in the mouth, vomiting, maybe coughing & wheezing. (It occurs) often with certain foods particularly peanuts, raw eggs, sometimes milk, soya, shellfish and nuts, when these children ingest the food."

If your child has a food allergy, there are two main concerns. First and foremost is that the child avoids the food that he or she is allergic to. The second concern is that parents work closely with a specialist to ensure that their child has an adequate diet explains allergy specialist, Dr. Edward Hein. "For children with food allergies, it's a very good idea to work with a physician and to also talk to a dietitian or nutritionist in order to make sure that the diet is adequate so that the child will grow and develop normally."

Once your child has been tested and the food allergy is confirmed, then it's vital that he or she is well informed of what food he or she is allergic to and that this food is avoided without exception says Dr. Dean. "If your child has been identified as having a specific food allergy, it's absolute avoidance. You cannot smuggle food, so any food that contains that food product such as milk solids in a hot dog has to be avoided."

Dr. Dean hastens to add that it's imperative anyone in regular contact with your child such as teachers and caregivers know just what to do if your child ingests the wrong stuff. Part of that game plan may include adrenalin. "If anyone has any major problem in their throat, difficulty swallowing or speaking, adrenalin is the only safe drug to use, and obviously you go straight to hospital," says Dean. It's recommended that children with food allergies carry a special emergency kit that contains a shot of adrenalin.

If you suspect your child has a true food allergy, then have her seen by a physician so testing can be arranged. Food allergies can be life threatening and therefore, must be taken seriously.

  • Re: 2 year old allergies
My son is allergic to the preservative in shelved, canned, packaged, bottled food. The only way out was to prepare 90%of his meals from scratch, He can still have the occasional bottled or boxed, but we always notice the itchies afterwards.

  • Red swollen ears as a reaction to egg allergy
My 9 month old baby broke out in hives after an allergic reaction to eggs. She had Children's Benadryl, 2 hours later both of her ears were swollen and red! Her hives are still present but not raised. We went to the ER and they had never seen swollen red ears as an allergic reaction to eggs. Any thoughts or similar experiences?? Thanks!

Hi, My daughter is 22 months old and I found out by chance that she also has a severe mustard allergy. I just came from the allergist's office and he confirmed the allergy with a skin test. I was hoping to talk to other mom's out there with this allergy. Is there other foods related to mustard that I should avoid? I have heard that any processed food with "spices" on it could contain mustard so should avoid that. I am so overwhelmed by... View More

  • 2 year old allergies
My two year old seems to get red blotches and her skin gets rough. It only happens on her back, chest and arms. It seems to itch her so she is now scratching a lot. Has anyone heard of a child allergy that might be familiar to these symptoms?

Hi my son suffers from one red hot ear. Every 4th or 5th time this happens his ear swells to the point i think it could explode. His ear is bright red and very hot. Is this like your 2year old? Has this happened again for you and do you think that it is a food allergy?

  • Re: allergies to peanuts
My daughter (who is 4 now) has a severe allergy to peanuts - she cannot even be in the room with them. It sounds like your son is allergic to them, too. Although, if he is able to stand by you while you make it, his does not sound like he can't be in the room with it. I'd take him to the doctor. Having a peanut allergy mean a lot of work on your part to keep him safe. I've got a couple great books on peanut allergies - including one for kids... View More

  • allergies to peanuts
My son is 22months old... I was making a peanut butter sandwhich for my daughter... When I was making it my son was standing right next to me and the jar of peanut butter fell off the counter onto the floor... When the jar hit the floor some of the peanut oil splashed out of the jar and landed on him, his skin started to turn red and became itchy... Could this mean he is allergic to peanuts??

First of all, I am not sure that you are aware that infants under the age of 1 should not be introduced to cow's milk. So that could be the reason why your infant vomited.

None of the above. Your 6 month old should not have those foods at that age-you might be putting her at-risk of developing a food allergy if you continue to feed her that.

Hi, sounds like a tough situation. It must be difficult to feed a child with so many allergies. I know that every family uses the childcare method that works for them. I just hope you keep in mind the benefits of child care for your son. The socialization is wonderful and being around other children improves cognitive and language skills as well. You may prefer being a stay-at-home mom, but you may consider enrolling your son in a half-day preschool... View More

  • Re: Why does my baby vomit?
Our son was the same way. He often had "cottage cheese" in the corner of his mouth, had a pukey smell, and would spit up after drinking milk. He had an endoscopy right before he turned two and it turned out he had a pretty rare esophogus disorder, eosinophilic esophogitis. We have now discovered that he is allergic to all of the biggies, dairy, wheat, soy, eggs, and nuts. If I had to do it over, I would not have waited. Insist that... View More

My son vomits with in minutes of ingesting milk, cheese or any other type of dairy. Up to now, we have substituted soymilk product and our doctor advised us not to have him tested until he is two. He'll be two in a month and there has been no change, so we have decided to have him tested.

It sounds like you need to explore the possibility of celiac disease with your little girl. Smelly or frothy stools, throwing up, diaper rash are just some of the symptoms of this disease. Unfortunately, celiac disesase if frequently misdiagnosed by the medical community, even though many people of northern European descent have the disease. Many years can go by with the disease being untreated and may result in future g.i. diseases. Sometimes... View More
