Newborn Vision

Newborn Vision While most vision develops perfectly in infants, there are some disorders that can become evident in those first 0 to 6 months of life.

Following birth, your newborn may be quite content to simply gaze into your eyes as you hold him in your arms. It's exciting to know that during those first moments of bonding, your baby is seeing your face very clearly, as long at you're about eight to twelve inches away and directly in front of your baby. As for colors, at birth babies see colors that are very bright and contrasting. Their full color vision is not developed until about 3 to 4 months of age, when they can determine hues and light shades. While vision problems are rare in newborns, some babies experience difficulties.

Infant Cataracts

Cataracts are a major cause of vision loss throughout the world. Usually age is a factor with most people over 60 years of age having some degree of cataract formation. But age isn't always a factor; cataracts can occur in newborns with devastating consequences. Ophthalmologist Dr. Roy Cline says it's imperative that cataracts in newborns are discovered sooner rather than later. "If babies have cataracts blocking their vision, there's no way for the visual sense to develop", explains Dr. Cline. "And unless those cataracts are discovered within the first few days of birth, there may be irreversible loss of vision."

Fortunately, physicians are on the lookout for newborn cataracts within the first few days of an infant's life. "Your family doctor or pediatrician", explains Dr. Cline, "is going to look at the red reflexes in a hospital nursery visit and also at the 6 week visit. A red reflex is when you look at the pupil and find a red light reflected back when you shine a light into the pupil. It tells you that light is getting into the eye and getting back out. If the red reflex is normal, then there are no cataracts and your baby is just fine. If cataracts are discovered then treatment is initiated immediately, and the outcome is excellent."

Crossed Eyes

Another concern parents may have with newborn vision is strabismus or crossed eyes, affecting about 5% of all children. Many newborns eyes appear to wander because they haven't yet learned to focus their vision, which is why crossed eyes are rarely cause for concern until a baby is at least a four months of age. If vision hasn't improved by then and your baby's eyes still appear to cross or wander out, you should have your baby examined by an eye specialist. If strabismus isn't properly treated, permanent vision impairment could result.

Samantha, How old were you when you had your cataract removed? My daughter is 7 weeks and was born with a cataract. She had the contact removed today and is so far doing good. How was it growing up with this problem? If you don't mind me asking a few questions. Please respond or e-mail me at jamie.whitcomb92@gmail.com. Thanks, Jamie

Hi, Since your granddaughter is almost 5 I was wondering if she had a cataract. My daughter is 7 weeks old and just had her cataract removed. I don't know any one with children that have cataracts and am curious of the future situation. If you could reply that would be great! Thanks :)

  • Cataract removed at 7 weeks.
My daughter was diagnosed with a cataract in her left eye when she was 1 day old. Today she is 7 weeks & had it removed. Much like many of your stories she will wear a contact and glasses until 5 or 6 then hopefully have a permanent lens put in. How have the children who had the lens put in done long term? The doctor said some don't hold but didn't know the percentage. I'm so glad this site is here. Its so helpful. Thanks!

My son also had a cataract removed from his left eye at 7 months. He needs to be patched 1/2 of his waking hours. For the first few months he would be cranky for the 1st hour that the patch was on and then he seemed to accept it for the rest of the time. At about 10 months he started figuring out how to rip the patch off and we started putting socks over his hands and taping them to his shirt. He is now 13 months old and we are putting fleece mittens... View More

I was born with a cataract in my left eye as well, I'm 18 now...surprises me to read how rare the condition is. My mom would use masking tape wrapped around my head to try and keep the patch on but I would always be able to get it off one way or another so she tells me. That's the only advice I have whether you find it appropriate or not. My stubbornness has given me 20/400+ vision in my left eye. Good luck with everything and the best of wishes that... View More

I'm 18 and was born with a unilateral caatract in my left eye. My lens was removed at 10 days old, yes the crossed eyes is normal for now but will more than likely improve, it happens to meat times because the technology they had back in 90 is nowhere near what it is today, I also was too stubborn of a child and my mom would use masking tape around my head to keep my patch on..didn't help..id get it offand I was 1 or 2..good luck with everything

Thannk for this reassurance, I jut got off the phone with my daughter, she had her baby daughter on Sept 19th. The dr. thought she had cateracts inutero, but then reassured my daughter she didn't have them. Took her for checkup yesterday at the doc and they said she has cateracts in both eyes. She is only 12 days old. They will do surgery on Oct. 17th. She will be 2 days shy of 1 month old. Thanks for the info! Lori

i have a similar story. i'm 21, and assume you too, are probably a very strong person. hang in there- mine developed into glaucoma, i've known one eyed blindness my whole life, which was fine. but the glaucoma caused too much pain for me, i had the eye removed last year. i'm actually really happy with the results, as scary and emotional as that was. you see, i had a huge scar on that eye from the surgery and mine was growing more and more consistenly... hi, this is alot like my story. i am now 21. as an infant, i had the cataract surgery, it failed- i developed glaucoma. it's so complex...your daughter is probably a very strong character from what she sees as an insecurity. i recently had a new surgery this year- for my eye, as something totally different. i don't know if it will help you, but feel free to email me with questions or if you just want to know my story.

My baby had a cataract removed in the left eye when she was 6mos old (she's 7mos now). I opted for glasses instead of contact lens because I heard a lot of horror stories with contacts in babies developing other eye infections. She has patch therapy supposedly for 2 hrs everyday, but she hates it and could only stand it 30 mins at most. I'm worried she won't develop vision if the patch therapy is not done correctly. What do you do to keep the patch... View More

Hi, first I wanted to let you know everything will turn out fine. My daughter was 7 weeks when she had surgery on her right eye to have the cataract removed. I have to admit it was scary just knowing they would have to put her to sleep to perform the surgery. I had enrolled her in a research study for infants with cataract in one eye (Infant Aphakia Treatment Study)they also have a website with information which is www.sph.emory.edu/IATS/. She did...
