Teen Fashion, Body Piercing and Tattooing

Teen Fashion, Body Piercing and Tattooing Body piercing, dyed hair, shaved heads and tattoos. Should teen fashion be cause for concern or celebration?

For many teens, hair and clothing is as important to them as food and water. Whether it's tattooing, body piercing, or the latest look in clothing, teens express themselves through what they wear and how they look. And if we remember, so did we. That's because adolescence is a time when kids are creating their own separate identity , and a large part of that is expressed through fashion.

This self expression is a short lived phase, which parent educator Sue Bourque believes should be celebrated. "In our whole life, in our one time, there is a very small window of opportunity between the years of 13 and 19 where it's okay to have blue hair, a shaved head, holey jeans. This window of opportunity is an opportunity for us as well to celebrate the changes that our teens are going through and their growth into adulthood."

While it may not be too difficult to accept teens shaving their heads or dying their hair, many parents become concerned when their teens want a tattoo simply because they are aware that a teen's tattoo will still be there well after the fashion fad has faded. Bourque suggests that "when a child comes to you and says I'm thinking of getting a tattoo, educate that child. We can do that by telling them to talk about it with a doctor and ask about medical concerns (such as) if you go to a tattoo parlor and you get a dirty needle."

Bourque also suggests discussing with your teen "what happens if once you have tattoos you go out and are looking for work. How will that employer view you? Our teens need this information and they should go out and find it themselves."

Overall, Bourque reminds parents and all adults to not judge a teen by the cover. "Parents can focus too much on the physical things that are happening to their kids and the styles they've taken on and forget that this is a commendable young person who is struggling valiantly to reach adulthood."

I'm 15 and I just got a tattoo. I also have a nose ring that I got at 14. My dad was willing to let me get them because I did research on both, and proved to him that they weren't just random decisions I was making. I totally understand that tattoos are permanent but I am %100 percent sure I'm not going to regret mine. I love that I am able to express myself through my tattoo and nose ring.

Hey,, ah,, me my parents don't want me to do my belly piercing, and they said to me that : until i'm leaving at their house, i will never have one even if i'm 18years old... But I really wan it ... so should I wait till i'm gon at my house? or i should get my belly piercing at my 18 even if they don't want? (but the problem is, I feel very uncomfortable with the fact that i'm doing this when my parents do not want) so should I do it ?

I think that a belly button is cool and looks good on certain girls. I am going to get one myself. A tongue piercing is not dumb if people think they are cool then they should get what ever they want.. like I said some people dont look right with some certain piercings.

Not only do you sound ridiculously immature, but it only takes 3-6 weeks for a tongue piercing to heal. You honestly need to get your facts straight. And as for cleaning it, after every time you eat, smoke, and drink certain liquids. Dumb ass

  • Re: Your advice on navl piercings, please!!!
actually some people can have cheap jewelry [better not to take the chance though] a lot of the time the reason ppl cant use cheap jewelry is because of a nickel allergy. oh an a red ring around it doesnt necessarily meen its infected, just irritated. she probably should change it to better grade jewelry though. otherwise it could lead to an infection.

well tongue actually doesnt hurt much at all. the bellybutton kinda hurts, because the skin is so thick. but its no comparison. i would say than the cartilage hurts the most. still not that bad though :p btw i have 14 piercings, tongue, belly, 7 lobes, 3 cartilage[helix, anti helix, and conch], and both sides of my nose. :D hehe

agreed. and i did get mine! haha! lol really the trick to it is showing your parents how mature you really are, by researching the topic, and sitting down and talking [not arguing] with them. but the fact of the matter is that our parents are involved in our lives, and most times have more control over it than we do. it sucks, but hey thats life. if there weren't some challenges that come along with it, what would be the point? :p

on a scale of 1-10 i'd say, 4. its just a little pin prick for a split second. then hey slide the jewelry in. thats kinda like a 3. then the swelling doesnt hurt, its like a warm feeling. and you might have a lisp lol :p and yea, it makes ur tongue swell. you know if it gets infected because it will normally have discoloured fluid leaking out of it. white or clear fluid is normal, dont worry about that. and it might taste of smell really off. i think... i think its kinda messed how parents wont let their kids get piercings, it semi permenant. besides it IS their body. and they can take it out any time they want. they are responsible to help their child make an informed decision, not to make it for them. thats just parents being rude, irresponsible, and closed minded.
