Teething

Overweight Children - Is Your Child Obese Is your child suffering from teething pain and discomfort? Or is teething pain just an old-time medical myth?

Sometime between four and six months of age, most babies get their first tooth, and they'll keep getting a new tooth until all of their primaries are in place by the age of two and a half years.

Any parent that has watched their baby cry in discomfort during the teething years would be hard pressed to say their child isn’t in some pain. But can it lead to illness? For many years people believed teething and illness were synonymous. In fact, as little as one hundred years ago teething was blamed for many infant deaths. So what’s the reality? More than likely it’s somewhere between the two explains Dr. Allan Green, author of From First Kicks to First Steps. "Good studies have shown that some babies experience significant discomfort, low grade fevers and diarrhea with teething", explains Dr. Greene.

But pediatrician Dr. William Feldman says that it also happens that between four months and two and a half years of age children are exposed to many viruses and bacteria, and it’s unwise to automatically blame illness on teething. His concern is that if parents simply chalk up their child’s fever to teething, a more serious illness can be missed. "If there is a fever which accompanies this, it's usually caused by a virus that just happens to be there at the same time," explains Feldman.

If your child is in discomfort from teething, the temptation is to soothe the gums with one of the many over-the-counter topical gels available at the pharmacy. But Dr. Greene does not recommend these. "The topical gels, I'm not a very big fan of. Many kids don't seem to like them very much. They leave the mouth feeling numb and swollen like you've just been to the dentist, they wear off very quickly, and they can decrease the gag reflex in some kids."

Instead Dr. Greene recommends "a variety of solutions for babies who are experiencing difficulty with teething. Massaging of the gums can be very helpful with a clean finger. There are some homeopathic teething gels that are quite gentle and many parents report great success with those."

Over all, while it is hard to see your child suffering from teething pain, remember that in the long run this is relatively short-lived period in your child’s life. Teething rings and massage can be helpful. And if your child becomes ill, don’t automatically assume that teething is to blame. Instead have your child seen by a physician to rule out any other health concerns.

  • Re: 7 month infant
Joanna I am a mother of three and my seven month old is also teething. Each child is different but the obvious signs are rubbing of the ears, swollen gums, excessive drooling, low grade fever, loose bowels and crankyness. An old remedy that seems to work is a frozen towel on the gums. I use that for my son and he loves it.

  • 2 1/2 months and drooling?
Okay, Ella's been drooling since 2 1/2 months she is a few days short of 4mths old now, she really hasn't been fussy. I just noticed she has her hand in her mouth a lot and the drooling has increased. Oh and I can feel the difference now when she is nursing. We've used orajel twice now but I'm not fond of it either.

Hi. My daughter just turned 7mo and you could feel the "lump" for a while. Then a week ago today she was rubbing my cousin's finger on her gums and bit her finger and it popped through. Everyone's different. Good luck. You might have to just help them out. I haven't seen her second one though she's showing the same symptoms, so I'm sure it's not too far from showing itself.

  • Extra teeth on sides of lower jaw line
H, Our baby is two and a half. Has started teething. But the two teeth like structures are appearing on both the sides of lower gum line, opposite to the canine tooth position. What are these, are these real teeth. Will they pose any problem? Should we conatct the Dentist? Is there any solution to this situation? Any help/suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Vikas

Yep! Same here. My son is 13 months old and he started teething at 6 months. The first few teeth did not come with a fever. He was fussy and everything else, but no fever. He now has 10 teeth and the last 3 teeth came with a fever. I was also told a virus the past 2 times. this time I know it is the tooth coming in. It is one of his molars and he is sooooo cranky! Thanks!

  • teething
Hi I am quite concerned. My daughter is almost one and she has yet to get her baby tooth. I can see 2 small humps on her lower jaw (for a while now)and she seems to be experiencing some of the symptoms associated with teething. I had expected that she would have her first tooth a few months ago. As this has yet to happen, can anyone tell me if this is normal?

  • Re: tooth lost
Children do not stop losing their baby teeth until they are 12-14 years old. Their baby molars, the last teeth to exfoliate, will be proceeded by their adult premolars or bicuspids.

I have a 3mo old boy, 3weeks ago he had a high temp brought him to the E/r. They did blood and urine cultures And kept him overnight and all was negative. Doc said it was a virus. Then my mom noticed that he was drooling, big bubbles, fist in mouth and suggested he might be teething, I ignored it. 1 week ago my baby ran a high temp again...same thing, E/R, blood/urine cultures, etc..& thankfully...all negative. They gave him tylenol and an anitbiotic... View More

I just gave birth to my second baby who already had her first 2 teeth...we did have to have 1 removed b/c it was very loose, but decided to keep the other in place. My first daughter was born w/ teeth as well and we did not have them removed nor did they fall out on their own, they seem to be her regular baby teeth..she is 3 now and has not had any problems w/ them so far

I have 3 kids.I have spent hours up at night with my kids in pain.(of course teething hurts!)It can also cause fevers, runny nose, rashes, ear pain, ect.I think unless their crying, you should just give them something cold & hard to bite on.(it helps the teeth break through faster)we used stuff from the freezer with the wrapper still on, popsicles, ect.(cutting off the pokey corners)or putting a big carrot in the freezer for a few minutes.when they... • The best teething tool I have found
Teething rings are fine, but infants get board with this tastless method of soothing gums. I have found the answer!!! I give my son a large dill pickle (obviously I monitor this activity for chocking), and he will gum and chew on this for an hour at least. A couple of pickles a day really takes the crying away. I have been doing this since he was 6 months old, he loves it and it has eliminated alot of frustration over teething. If we go out for... View More
