High School & Homework

High School & Homework Too many school assignments and too few hours? There’s no time like the present to give your teen some valuable lessons in time management.

High school is a whole different game for a lot of students. Because kids generally have many different teachers and subjects to deal with, they also have many different assignments and exams to work on. And that means if a high school student needs help with anything, it’s managing their time says education professor, Ian Cameron. “Time management is very, very important and the older the child is the more important it becomes because there are more and more calls on the child’s time.”

Cameron adds that in order to be successful in school, teens need to learn about the pitfalls of procrastination. “They should know that they should begin work on an assignment the day it’s given, not the day before it’s due.”

Education professor Allison Preece agrees that managing time effectively is paramount to the high school student. She says parents can help their teens meet the time crunch challenge by “asking them how they are going to handle things, rather than assigning times when they will be doing their homework. This can be very positive and put the responsibility on their shoulders while signaling that they have our support and that we will help them with these time demands.”

Cameron adds that when parents are aware of their child’s workload, they not only help them with time management, but can ensure that they’re not overburdened. “You may discover that unreasonable demands are being placed upon your son or daughter. They may have six teachers who have all given them an assignment at one time and they are all due in the same week.” If that is the case, it’s wise to talk to the teachers, who may be unaware of this. “As a parent I would write a note to the teacher explaining they have six assignments, which will all take at least two hours,” says Cameron, adding that as with any education issue, success is more easily attainable when there is clear communication between home and school.
