What to say when your child questions the big guy in red.
During this time of the year, you can count on a few things. Children will begin to be inundated with toy commercials, and their wish lists will begin to grow. And, as they get older, their questions about the big guy in red will start to pop up. But while children may have their doubts as they grow older, you can still look them in the eye and say “yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus”, says Alyson Shafer, author of Honey I Wrecked the Kids.
“I still believe in the big guy in red. There’s still a Santa Clause, I believe in the spirit of Christmas, and the thrill of all of that. I think at some point kids start to ‘nudge-nudge, wink-wink’ and you continue to smile and you keep sharing that you love the old man. And, eventually, with time the willing suspension of disbelief might fade from your kids, but they’ve chosen to do it at their own pace, and so in a sense they just come over to your side which is still talking about Santa Claus but perhaps with a little wink in their eye.”
