Why teaching tolerance to our kids begins with examining ourselves.
It takes all types of people to make this world go round. And simply because no two people are alike, and we all need to live together on this planet, it’s vital that our children learn to be tolerant of others. But as Sharon Hall, author of Raising Kids in the 21st Century explains, teaching tolerance to our children really begins with examining ourselves. “The first thing parents must do is to examine themselves and see how their tolerance path is either progressing or not. So we need to be good models of tolerance in our homes. We need to practice an egalitarian mode of being with other people, we need to interact with people from various groups and we need value our relationships with people in our lives and show children how important that is for good development, for positive development of all.”
