Skating Safety

How to keep kids safe and sound when skating on a pond.

Skating Safety

There’s nothing quite as magical as skating on a lake or pond. It’s also a fun family activity, and a great way to get exercise and fresh air in the middle of winter.  However, it is important that parents take a few precautions to ensure the ice is perfectly safe says Dr. Bruce Minnes, Emergency Room Pediatrician at the Hospital for Sick Children. “We need to be aware of the thickness of the ice of course, so that it can bear the weight that the people are putting on it, and also recognize that the thickness of the ice is not necessarily uniform over the entire surface that you are going to be engaging in your activity on.  So using a drill, using an axe to cut a hole in the ice to get some idea of the thickness of the ice is most important.  Being aware of some of the tell-tale signs that the ice may be cracking or moving, and having other people around so that you’re not out solo, and making sure that your have appropriate rescue equipment available.”
