How kid marketers have created a whole generation of parent naggers.
Did you know that in North America $15 billion dollars is spent on marketing products to children each year? No wonder parents get regularly nagged to buy this or that . Dr. Susan Linnn, author of the book “Consuming Kids” says that while we can help counter act this nag factor by being honest about what we can afford to spend on things, the reality is, always saying “no” to our kids is far from easy. “Psychologists like me tell parents that they should pick their battles. I mean haven’t we all heard that? “Pick your battles. Don’t sweat the small stuff.” But which battle should parents pick? It’s not a level playing field between the marketing industry and a single family. How can one family in isolation take on a 15 billion dollar industry? And in order to be a good parent today, what you’d have to be doing is saying ‘no’ to your child from the moment your child wakes up in the morning to the moment they go to bed at night.”
