Tips on how to prevent the sometimes deadly ‘hamburger disease’.

Summertime is barbeque season, but we need to be extra careful, particularly when grilling burgers. Lynn Wilcott with the Food Protection Services at the BC Centre for Disease Control tells us more about the sometimes deadly ‘hamburger disease’. “It’s typically associated with ground hamburger, ground beef, and it’s caused by the hamburger not being properly cooked. It’s especially dangerous for young children. If they’re infected by this organism they have a much higher likelihood of developing serious complications as compared to adults”

It’s important to cook burgers to a minimum of 71 degrees Celsius or 160 degrees Fahrenheit. “It’s really important to use a meat thermometer every time you cook meat as the safest indication to make sure you have brought it up to the proper temperature to kill those pathogens”
