How to plan a vacation that every member of your family will enjoy.
When it comes to family vacations, naturally it’s the parents who cover the costs. But that doesn’t mean we should have all the say in where we go and what we do. In fact, having the whole family plan the holiday simply makes a better vacation for everyone, says Alyson Schafer, author of Honey I Wrecked the Kids.”In the democratic model we’re asking kids to participate in decision making, and to share their opinions, so what better way than to show them how to do that then to invite them to participate in planning the family holiday.”
Having your children help plan the holiday is a great way to get them more involved, Alyson says. “You’re going to have kids who are going to be more likely to feel invested in the holiday, who are going to want it to go well, who are going to be enthused about it because they actually helped plan it. They’ve had a choice to say whether or not they want to see the dinosaur bones or go to the museum. So when you finally decide as a family and you expedite on it, you’ve already got buy-in and cooperation from everybody.”
