Making Your Teen’s Prom Meaningful

Sometimes moms can look forward to their daughter’s prom night more than she does.

Prom Season

Are you over invested in your daughter’s prom, and by this I mean more than the financial costs of prom dresses, hair and makeup? For some mothers their daughter’s prom is a chance to relive their own, or perhaps live the experience they never had. Phyllis Cohen, co-author of You Have To Say I’m Pretty, You’re My Mother explains that “mother’s get overly invested in the prom of their daughter because they want this to be the event of their daughter’s teenage years. We do know that this has gotten to be a major kind of glamour event. It’s her night on the red carpet, but let’s put all of this into perspective for her, and that it really is not just about how you look. It’s also about how you participate in the event and how much fun you have, and not just about looking pretty.”
