Tweens, Teens & Social Media

Why Facebook and other social media is so important to tweens and teens.

The Culture of Technology

If you want to make life tough on your child, just ban them from using social media.  For kids, tweens and teens in particular, social media is now a big part of their social life explains Patti Agatston, co-author of Cyber Rules. “For kids, it’s really part of their social world, so it just enhances their social experience and it’s very important to them to have access to these technologies. It’s also a place for them to play and spend time with friends.”

While too much computer time is a worry, there is a very positive side to life on-line. “There is a positive side to technology. Kids are very creative in how they use it, and it does allow access to socialization for kids who might occasionally be more excluded. And so, there are a lot of ways that kids are able to connect through technology in a positive way. But, without any guidelines, or limits it can also be used in a negative manner.”
