How Today’s Dads Are Getting More Involved

How today’s dad parent differently from their dads.

Getting Involved

Watch a TV show or movie from a few generations ago and you realize just how differently dads parent today. With each generation they seem to get more and more involved with the hands on care and nurturing of their children says Dr. Jeremy Freidman, author of Canada’s Toddler Care Book. “This generation is quite different perhaps from the last generation. I think that fathers are becoming increasingly involved and that’s a tremendous thing. It really seems like general things like changing diapers and putting the child to sleep, it does seem that more and more fathers are feeling quite comfortable with this. That said, most of their information and learning is coming from the mother, so I think they are still very dependant on the mom’s guiding them, but at least they’re starting to feel more comfortable with the diaper changing, putting to sleep and feeding, which maybe a generation ago would have been more unusual.”

The Parent Report’s guest expert is Dr. Jeremy Friedman, Head of Pediatric Medicine at the Hospital for Sick Children and the author of Canada’s Toddler Care Book.
