Poison Prevention

What every parent needs to know to prevent childhood poisonings.

Poison Prevention

Poisoning is a top cause of hospitalization of children under 6 years of age. It’s why keeping all toxic products in their original containers is so important says Pamela Fuselli, Executive Director of SafeKids Canada. “Parents should keep products in their original packaging for a number of reasons. First, so you know actually what is in the container, but also if your child or anyone else happens to ingest the liquid or the product, and you do go for medical help, you are able to tell them what it is that they took and can read the label as to what’s actually in the product. And you can try to estimate how much has been ingested of that product.” And it’s important to keep toxic products out of reach and locked up. “Children explore their environment and they’re very good at climbing and getting into things that they shouldn’t so if it’s locked, then you’ve created another barrier for that child and keeping that product out of their reach.”
