The role today’s dads play in childbirth and newborn care
There was a time when a father’s role was relegated to breadwinner and disciplinarian. Even childbirth and infant care was a hands-off experience. Not so anymore. Today’s new dads are actively involved with their children even before they are born, and they play a big role in those early months of life, explains Nora Spinks with The Vanier Institute of the Family.
“When we look at dads today, they’re more involved in participating in things like prenatal programs, and they’re actively involved in labour and delivery. We’re also seeing dads very actively involved in those early days, in part because they want to be there, and in part because, historically, the care of the newborn and the new mom was done by grandmother or grand mother-in-law. They’re now in the paid labour force and so dads are picking up that particular role.”
